Ohio vendor’s license and sales-tax registration checklist

Before collecting sales tax, confirm whether your actual products or services are taxable and which registration applies. A vendor’s license is separate from forming the business.

Records to gather

  • Legal business name and any registered trade name.
  • Operating locations and whether sales are fixed-location, mobile or online.
  • Descriptions of products and services, expected start date and marketplace activity.
  • Existing Ohio tax registrations and any Department of Taxation correspondence.

Confirm the tax and license type

Use the Ohio Department of Taxation’s current sales-and-use-tax instructions or ask a qualified tax professional. Do not assume every service is taxable or that an online marketplace handles every obligation.

Keep records consistent

Match the owner or entity across the application and business records. Use the official account system identified by the Department of Taxation. Submit sensitive identifying information only through the required secure process.

Plan returns and recordkeeping

Ask about the assigned filing schedule, record retention, exemption documentation and closing or changing the account. State entity registration does not automatically keep a sales-tax account up to date.

Fees and official instructions

Confirm the current license fee and type with the Department of Taxation or the issuing county. Collected sales tax, license fees and private preparation charges are different amounts.

Ask about document preparation

Tell us the filing or paperwork you need help with. We confirm whether we can assist, the documents to bring and the preparation quote before work begins. Government charges and outside professional fees are separate.

Visit 3185 Morse Rd, Suite 15, Columbus, OH 43231. Call ahead to confirm the task and appointment details.
