Ohio business paperwork · Reviewed September 15, 2026

Find the licenses and permits for an Ohio business

Start with the work you will do and the address where it will happen. Forming an LLC does not identify or obtain every license, permit or inspection the operation needs.

Records to gather

  • A clear description of services, products and any regulated work.
  • The operating address, city or township, and county.
  • Plans for a storefront, home office, mobile service or employees.
  • Any proposed lease, building work, equipment or agency checklist.

Check state and local requirements

Use Ohio’s business roadmap and the responsible licensing board for the activity. Contact the city, township or county about zoning, occupancy, building work and local permits. Professional licensing and a company’s registration serve different purposes.

Check the location before committing

Ask the local office whether the intended activity is permitted at the address before signing a lease or starting alterations. Home-based businesses should check local rules as well as lease or association restrictions.

Use the relevant industry checklist

Food businesses, childcare, construction trades and salons have different authorities. Keep each agency’s written requirements and approval records together. A license held by an employee may not satisfy a facility or company requirement.

Fees and official instructions

There is no universal Ohio business-license price. Licensing authorities set their own application, inspection and renewal charges. Obtain current fees from the agencies responsible for your activity.

Ask about document preparation

Tell us the filing or paperwork you need help with. We confirm whether we can assist, the documents to bring and the preparation quote before work begins. Government charges and outside professional fees are separate.
