Ohio DBA, trade name and fictitious name registration
Using a business name different from the owner’s legal name requires a different review from forming an LLC. Start by identifying who owns the business and which name will appear on invoices, contracts and bank records.
Records to gather
- The proposed business name and the activity it will identify.
- The exact legal name of the individual or entity using the name.
- Existing Ohio entity number, if the owner is already registered.
- Contact information and the authorized signer’s instructions.
Choose the correct name filing
Ohio Form 534A covers trade names and fictitious names. Those registrations have different name-availability requirements. Check the state’s instructions before selecting a filing; an available web address is not evidence that the business name is clear.
Keep the owner and business name separate
A name registration does not create an LLC or corporation. Keep the same underlying owner identified on the application, banking paperwork and tax records. A change in the company’s legal name may require an entity amendment instead.
Before ordering signs or opening an account
Confirm the accepted state record first. Ask the bank what evidence it needs for an account using the additional name. A state name filing does not settle trademark rights or permission to use another business’s branding.

The state’s Form 534A filing fee is $39. Optional expedited service and any private preparation charge are separate. Verify the current state fee before paying.
