A practical business planning checklist
Write down how the business will serve customers, earn income and cover costs before spending on filings, a lease or equipment. Use real information and clearly label estimates.
Records to gather
- The service or product, target customers and evidence of demand.
- Your intended location, operating process and suppliers.
- Written startup quotes and recurring expense estimates.
- Expected sales assumptions and the amount of cash available.
Explain the offer
Describe what customers buy, how they find you and what you will deliver. Check actual competitors and customer needs instead of filling the plan with broad market claims.
Separate facts from estimates
Keep one-time startup costs separate from monthly costs. State the assumptions behind sales estimates and consider what happens if sales start slowly. Label forecasts as estimates and retain the quotes or records behind them.
Match the plan to its purpose
A personal planning outline may be shorter than a lender’s application package. Ask the intended reader for its requirements. A business plan does not guarantee financing or replace licensing, tax or legal review.
Fees and official instructions
Use actual provider quotes and official filing fees for the budget. SBA offers business-planning resources and access to counseling; check the current options before buying assistance.
